The hermit
One day, when a traveler was troubled and in need of peaceful escape from the madness of this world, they chanced across a cave in the most solitary of places. The cave was welcoming but far too dark to see what was inside. So they cautiously entered and there they found a old and wise man who was seated, still and silent.
At first they hesitated to speak, for they were not sure if they were welcome there. But the old man smiled warmly, so he was asked his name. The old man said he’d been called by many names but the traveler should simply know him as 'The Hermit'. The Hermit saw the lost and troubled look on the traveler's face, so he beckoned that they sit down beside him and talk.
The traveler remained with the Hermit for some time that day as he began to share many wondrous teachings with them. Indeed, so inspiring were his words that the traveler decided to return to the old man each and every day after that. That way they would sit and learn much great wisdom. He Hermit spoke with a truth and a profoundness that brought great clarity and understanding to the eager traveler's world.
Then just as the traveler's soul began to find familiarity with the gentle and wise guidance of the Hermit, he was suddenly gone! The distraught traveler searched high and low for some sign of his mentor. But of that wonderful, gentle man there was no trace. Eventually the traveler sat down in the emptiness of the cave and wept sadly.
When the distraught traveler had no more tears to shed, they began to recognize that although the physical presence of the Hermit was gone from their life, his profound teachings would never die. The Hermit had taught the traveler to realize that the wisdom he had so graciously shared with them would forever remain alive and vital in their mind - as long as they cherished its value in the sanctity of their own heart.
With this understanding the traveler chose to give up their travels and remain in that solitary place from that moment on. That way they could reflect further on the words the Hermit had shared with them. Indeed, they soon came to realize that this brought more joy and fulfillment to their life than anything they had encountered so far.
Some time later a young Seeker entered the cave. When the Seeker saw the Traveler for the first time they appeared nervous. However, the Traveler smiled at them and so the Seeker eventually found the courage to ask the Traveler his name. Recalling what the old Hermit had said to them, the Traveler told the youth they had indeed been known by many names, but they should just know them as 'The Hermit'.
The Seeker seemed content with this and began to ask the new Hermit all manner of questions. The new Hermit recognized the troubled look in the Seeker's eyes, so they beckoned them to sit with them and talk. Then recalling the wise words of the old Hermit, the new Hermit repeated the teachings that had been given to them - in the hope that the Seeker might also find comfort in them.
